JCL
Job Control Language is how you tell z/OS to run something. Three statement types do almost all the work, and DISP causes almost all the trouble.
What you will be able to do
- Write a job that runs a program with input and output files
- Explain every parameter on a DD statement you meet
- Predict what DISP will do before you submit
Lessons
- What JCL is forJCL is not a programming language. It is a work order. It says which program to run, what files to give it, and what to do with those files afterwards.
- The JOB and EXEC statementsThe JOB statement is the header: who is running this, how it should be classified, and what should happen if it goes wrong.
- DD statements: connecting programs to dataA DD statement answers one question: when this program asks for the file it calls INFILE, what should it actually get?
- DISP, the parameter that causes the most troubleDISP has three parts: what state the dataset is in now, what to do if the step succeeds, and what to do if it fails.
- Procedures, symbols and overridesA procedure is reusable JCL kept in a library. You call it, and optionally change parts of it from outside.
