| DEFINE CLUSTER | Create a VSAM file |
| DEFINE ALTERNATEINDEX / PATH | Create an alternate index and the path over it |
| DEFINE GDG(NAME(x) LIMIT(n)) | Create a generation data group |
| DEFINE NONVSAM | Recatalog a non-VSAM dataset |
| BLDINDEX | Populate an alternate index from the base cluster |
| REPRO | Copy records in either direction |
| PRINT INFILE(x) CHARACTER | HEX | DUMP | Print records for inspection |
| LISTCAT ENT('name') ALL | Full catalog detail |
| DELETE 'name' | Delete, with the data |
| DELETE 'name' NOSCRATCH | Remove the catalog entry only |
| ALTER 'name' NEWNAME('new') | Rename |
| VERIFY DATASET('name') | Repair a cluster left open after a failure |
| SET MAXCC=0 | Reset the condition code so a failed command does not fail the step |
Reading LISTCAT output
| Field | Watch for |
|---|---|
| REC-TOTAL / REC-DELETED | High deletions mean wasted space |
| SPLITS-CI / SPLITS-CA | Rising CA splits mean a reorganisation is due |
| EXTENTS | Approaching the limit means a space abend is coming |
| HI-USED-RBA / HI-ALLOC-RBA | How full the allocation is |
