BeginnerFAQs
How do I know whether a program is batch or CICS?
Three quick tells in the source.
- EXEC CICS statements — the definitive sign. Any program containing them runs under CICS.
- DFHCOMMAREA in the LINKAGE SECTION — a pseudo-conversational CICS program.
- SELECT/ASSIGN and OPEN/READ/CLOSE on files — standard COBOL file I/O means batch; CICS programs use EXEC CICS file commands instead.
- GOBACK versus EXEC CICS RETURN — the latter is CICS.
- A FILE SECTION with FDs — batch. CICS programs describe records in WORKING-STORAGE.
