CoreTrouble
Spool is filling up
A system-wide condition that can stop new work across the whole system.
Immediate actions
- Find the largest output on the spool — SDSF ST sorted by size, or your site's monitoring.
- Look for a looping job writing messages continuously. Cancel it if it is the cause.
- Purge output that is no longer needed, oldest first, respecting retention rules.
- Alert whoever owns spool management — this is usually a systems programming responsibility.
Prevention
- Never leave a program writing an unbounded message loop, even in test.
- Route bulk output to a dataset rather than SYSOUT.
- Purge your own finished output routinely.
- Ask whether output archiving is configured for high-volume jobs.
